Doctoral Dissertation in progress

"Citizens’ access to Primary Health Care Services in island regions – field research"

Commencement date: June 22, 2021

Description

The main objective of the proposed doctoral dissertation is to explain the reasons for the incomplete development and utilization of health services at local level, especially by vulnerable population groups – migrants and refugees. For this purpose, the organization of primary health in the country will be analyzed and the conditions that need to be met to achieve the necessary quality in the relevant health services will be examined.

The aim is, on the one hand, to demonstrate whether primary health care services are accessible to both Greek citizens and migrants and refugees living in the island region of the North Aegean. On the other hand, it will be sought to what extent these services can be classified as quality – at least, as this is perceived by stakeholders and healthcare professionals.

In this context, the necessary field research (through interviews) will be carried out on the island of Lesvos, as a typical example of an island region, which in the last five years has been called upon to respond to the large flows of migrants and refugees. More specifically, research topics will be the following:

- The factors required for quality health services and contributing to the satisfaction of primary health care users will be evaluated according to the responses of the participants in the survey in the primary health care structures of the prefecture of Lesvos. Do the health services of primary health care and the level of quality cover the health needs of the inhabitants of Lesvos and the migrants/refugees?

- The proposals made by the participants in the survey will also be evaluated, in order to improve the institution of primary health care in the individual villages of Lesvos, where the interviews will take place. These proposals will show whether the key features of primary health care are reflected.
