Curriculum Vitae

Effrosyni Charitopoulou is an Assistant Professor in Political Science in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She studied International Relations and Economics at the University of St Andrews and went on to pursue postgraduate studies in Sociology at the University of Oxford (St Antony’s College). She completed her doctoral dissertation, titles “The European Refugee Crisis in Greece: Understanding Host Communities” at the University of Oxford (Nuffield College), supported by scholarships from the A. G. Leventis Foundation, the Alexander S. Onassis Foundation, and Nuffield College.

She has worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Politics and International Relations at the university of Oxford (2020) and at Collegio Carlo Alberto (2021-2022). She subsequently served as a Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute (2022-2023) and as the Hannah Seeger Davis Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Princeton University (2023-2025), where she also worked as a Lecturer at the Department of Politics (2025).

Her research interests lie in the field of political sociology. She focuses on the dynamics that define intergroup relations, with a particular focus on relationships between local populations and migrants. While most of the literature investigates the emergence of prejudice and discrimination, her research examines the processes that lead to their reduction  and to the development of intergroup solidarity and trust. She also researches issues related to electoral behavior and social capital. Her research has been funded by the John Fell Fund of the University of Oxford and the British Academy.

At the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, she is co-coordinator of the Political Analysis seminar.
