Susannah Verney is a graduate of the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University of London (BA History, First Class Honours). She completed her PhD at King’s College, London, on the subject of Greek political parties and the debate on accession to the EEC, 1974-1979. She has been an Associate Researcher at the University of Glasgow (2024-2027, 2021-24, 2018-21, 2016-18), and a Visiting Research Fellow at the London School of Economics (November-December 2010 and March 2011), and the University of Bradford (2003-05, 2000-02 και 1992-1995) and the University of Bristol (1994-1998). She worked as a Senior Investigator in the Department of Human Rights at the Office of the Greek Ombudsman (1998-2001).
From 1999 to 2023 Susannah Verney was Editor of the academic journal South European Society and Politics and the related book series (Routledge) from 1999 to 2003 (from 2008 with Professor Anna Bosco). She has also served as an Associate Editor (2000-02) of the JournalofModernGreekStudies(2000-02) and as a member of the Editorial Boards of South European Society and Politics (2023-today), JournalofBalkanandNearEasternStudies (1999-today), Journal of Modern Greek Studies (20210-2024), European Political Science Review (2009-2014) and Mediterranean Politics (1994-1998). She was the elected Coordinator (2007-2016) and then Chair of the Steering Committee (2016-2022) of the ECPR Standing Group on Southern European Politics.
In 2019-2024 Susannah Verney served as Athens Coordinator of the International Master’s Degree in South European Studies (EUROSUD), an Erasmus programme coordinated by the University of Glasgow and with partners the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the Autonomous University of Madrid, Aix-Marseille University and LUISS Guido Carli University (Rome). She has also served as Director (2022-2024) and Coordinator (2006-2010) of the Master’s Degree in Southeast European Studies: Politics, History, Economics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
