CLASSICAL POLITICAL THEORY

Historical review of the central concepts of ancient political thought and their reception.

The course aims to

  • offer a review of the fundamental political ideas of antiquity
  • examine their reception and influence on the history of political thought
  • comparatively evaluate the similarities and differences with modern political ideas

Syllabus

  • The Athenian democracy: institutions and practices
  • The role of passions in ancient political thought
  • Ancient political imagery
  • Ancient conceptions of justice, freedom and equality
  • The evolvement of political theory in the Hellenistic era

Learning outcomes

Completion of the course will enable students to

  • understand the significance of the fundamental concepts of the ancient political thought
  • realise the importance of the ancient conceptions for the political experience and thought of modernity.
