The course aims to
- offer a review of the fundamental political ideas of antiquity
- examine their reception and influence on the history of political thought
- comparatively evaluate the similarities and differences with modern political ideas

- The Athenian democracy: institutions and practices
- The role of passions in ancient political thought
- Ancient political imagery
- Ancient conceptions of justice, freedom and equality
- The evolvement of political theory in the Hellenistic era
Learning outcomes
Completion of the course will enable students to
- understand the significance of the fundamental concepts of the ancient political thought
- realise the importance of the ancient conceptions for the political experience and thought of modernity.
