SUMMER SCHOOL "FIGHTING FOR DEMOCRACY IN EXILE"

Summer School "Fighting for Democracy in Exile"

The Deutsche Gesellschaft e. V. is calling for applications for its Summer School „Fighting for Democracy in Exile“ that will take place in Berlin from 5 - 9 August 2024 (funded by the Federal Foundation for the Study of the Communist Dictatorship in East Germany). Applications must be submitted by 15 May 2024.

15 Master's students and PhD-candidates in the social sciences and humanities from Europe are invited to engage with the role of protest in exile for regime-transformation and its political and societal implications in both country of origin and host country, and to discuss them with experts from the fields of science, politics and civil society.

The Summer Academy focuses on four main topics:

  1. Who, when and why: Current and historical reflections on mobilisation and protest in exile
  2. Globalisation and digitisation: Forms of protest through the ages
  3. Success, failure and repression: Consequences and effects of the exile protest in the country of origin
  4. Political challenges and possible actions for the countries of exile

Participation is free of charge. Hotel fees, catering and travel expenses (in line with the German Travel Expense Act) are covered. The working language of the event is English.
